VITA Tax Information

Volunteers Needed!

The Senior Resource Center is currently looking for volunteers to serve as intake specialists and tax preparers for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA).

Intake specialists meet and screen potential clients to determine if they are eligible for this service (no tax preparation is done by intake volunteers).

Volunteer tax preparers will receive IRS-approved training and IRS certification. Training starts in November with self-study work before transitioning to classroom and computer training in JanuaryTraining concludes with practical exercises that focus on preparing sample returns on IRS-provided software wrapping up the training process.

The tax filing process will begin sometime in late January or early February and will continue through April 15. Volunteers are asked to commit to working at least four hours per week to help those in-need.

For information on how you can volunteer to lend a hand, contact Becky Doherty at the New Hanover County Senior Resource center at 910-798-6406 or bdoherty@nhcgov.com

This page will be updated in February 2022 with details on how to access the programs to file simple Federal and NC tax returns.
