Special Needs

The Registry is a computer list of individuals who live in New Hanover County and have special physical, medical or functional disabilities that would place them at higher risk in an emergency event such as a hurricane.

Individuals who are on the registry will be contacted by one of our trained RSVP volunteers 72 to 36 hours before a hurricane (or other known disaster) is expected to hit our area. The volunteer will review their Personal Disaster Plan and notify the Special Needs Task Force Team* if additional assistance or evaluation is needed.

To become a volunteer with the Special Needs Registry contact Valerie Smith at vsmith@nhcgov.com or call 910-798-6406. To be put on the registry contact Jeanette Bell jbell@nhcgov.com or call 910-798-6416.
